Lockout/Tagout Safety: Key Tips for Authorized and Affected Employees

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are critical for ensuring workplace safety during maintenance and service tasks by keeping energy controls in a safe, “off” position. The Kentucky AGC Self Insurers’ Fund outlines essential guidelines for two key roles: authorized and affected employees.
Authorized Employees are trained to identify and control energy sources, typically in maintenance or construction. They must:
  • Use individually assigned lock keys and remove their own locks.
  • Label locks with durable, identifiable tags.
  • Never share locks, keys, or combinations.
  • Ensure shift transitions involve new locks before removing their own.
  • Verify all energy is dissipated and test systems before starting work.
  • Use LOTO devices suited for the environment (e.g., corrosive or humid).
Affected Employees work near LOTO-controlled areas but are not authorized to perform LOTO. They should:
  • Avoid danger zones during system reenergization.
  • Participate in employer-provided LOTO training.
  • Refrain from LOTO procedures unless trained and certified under an approved Energy Control Program.
Proper training and adherence to these safety practices are vital for both roles to prevent accidents and ensure a safe work environment.
